Health Risks of Electronic Cigarettes vs. Regular Cigarettes

Any mention of the word cigarette is bad and almost makes cigarette smokers feel like criminals. Regular cigarettes contain over 4,000 chemicals of which 69 are known to be cancer causing. Regular cigarettes contain the following dangerous chemicals.

  • Carbon monoxide
  • Ammonia
  • Nitrogen oxides
  • Hydrogen cyanides
  • Methane
  • Methanol
  • Butane

If you have ever smoked or lived with a smoker, you can see the residue whenever you clean the television or the walls. That sticky brown tar from cigarette smoke seems to be everywhere, and that includes your lungs. Second hand smoke is another danger to those around you.

Electronic Cigarettes Health Risks and Benefits

Electronic Cigarettes do not contain any of these chemicals. E-Cigs do not contain the smoke and the tar. Yes, nicotine is addictive, but with the E-Cigs, you do not get the tar, chemicals and the smoke that you do with regular cigarettes. There are many first hand reports on the internet from people that state their lungs and breathing felt much better after switching to electronic cigarettes after years of smoking regular cigarettes.

The FDA does not recognize electronic cigarettes as a smoking cessation product like they do nicotine patches and gum. The main reason is that E-Cigs are inhaled and there have not been enough studies on electronic cigarettes to prove that inhaling nicotine and the nicotine flavors are healthy or not.

A main concern of the FDA is that electronic cigarettes will get non-smokers addicted to nicotine, especially kids. At this time, there are no laws as to who can buy E-Cigs, and that does concern the FDA. Big cigarette companies are now buying electronic cigarette companies or making their own electronic cigarettes and more definitive laws should be forthcoming.

Another concern of the FDA comes from a 2009 study that found cancer causing chemicals in the nicotine flavors, specifically diethylene glycol, which is found in anti-freeze. But the FDA can stop any electronic cigarettes at the border if any part of the product is made overseas, such as China. More and more, electronic cigarette companies are making their products in the United States under strict guidelines.

Where Can You Use Electronic Cigarettes

Contrary to the ads you might see about electronic cigarettes, I have not found one place where you can have an E-Cig. I called several airlines and I was told me you cannot have or smoke an electronic cigarette on an airline.

I called major venues where sports teams play and I was told no, you cannot have an E-cig. City and state laws put together tobacco with nicotine and nicotine products are not allowed. There are state laws that prohibit tobacco and nicotine on school properties. Yet they allow nicotine patches and nicotine gum, but not electronic cigarettes.

I called restaurant chains and was told I could not use an electronic cigarette in their business. Some decisions were based on corporate police, others states city or state laws. Mainly, it seems that some patrons see anything resembling a cigarette and they get angry, and that is currently dictating policy.

I also called the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and they have a definition of electronic cigarettes and they cannot advertise on over-the-air television or radio. Satellite and cable ads are different and this is why you can see the E-Blue electronic cigarette ads on satellite and cable channels.

I was told by several government employees that the subject is confusing, touchy and not defined. Hopefully legislatures, corporations and regulators will address this issue and define it clearly.
